Lawn Watering – How Often and How Long

The frequency of lawn watering is what you need to adapt to its water needs. It depends on many factors, of which one is soil quality. If your ground is permeable, then the grass needs more water. On loamy and cohesive soils, even a small amount of water can be enough for sufficient irrigation.

Another important factor that you should consider when preparing for lawn watering is the season and weather conditions. During the summer, in sunny places, the turf dries up faster because water evaporates quickly. Thus, throughout the dry season, you should water your lawn frequently and abundantly.

An equally important aspect is the time that has passed since the lawn was established. A freshly planted one should be watered daily until the grass has rooted well. The more mature your lawn gets, the less water it will require to maintain that fresh look.

When and How You Should Water the Lawn

Lawn watering should always be carried out when water evaporation is low and the blades are not in danger of getting burned. Therefore, the best time for all kinds of irrigation in summer is early morning or evening.

In the morning, the sun does not shine intensely, so there is no risk of damaging the delicate blades. By the time the sun starts to warm up, the grass will dry out. The water evaporates slowly in the morning, so it reaches the roots more quickly. Such performance is more beneficial and more economical, as the water consumption is lower.

Watering the lawn in the evening works best when performed early enough for the grass to dry before the night. Thus, use a little water, as overwatering may cause mold, fungus, and moss to appear on the lawn. Especially when the soil is compacted and placed in a shaded place. Such conditions favor the growth of moss.

Lawn Watering by Hand or Automatically?

Whatever you choose – lawn watering by hand or with automated technology – remember to perform it with a diffused stream. You should select all the spraying nozzles, connectors, and sprinklers according to the hose diameter. Therefore, if you are looking for lawn watering equipment, it is best to start with choosing a watering hose.

The basic thing is the diameter of the garden hose through which the water will flow to the sprinkler. Take into consideration that as the length of the hose increases, the pressure of the stream in the sprinkler decreases. In turn, the pressure drop reduces the spraying range.

When buying a lawn watering hose, you should also choose one that is resistant to twisting and bending. Moreover, it should have a protective layer against UV rays. Otherwise, you will have to replace the hose with a new one in a matter of weeks, or at least stow it away in a shady place for the day.

An alternative to manual lawn watering is automatic watering. Creating such a system is not very demanding but it includes a few important elements, like an irrigation controller, water dividers, hoses, and detectors. The most popular automatic systems usually use sprinklers that imitate natural rainfall. There are also dripping systems, which deliver a small amount of water directly and continuously to the grassroots. You can also choose from soaker hoses that gently release small droplets of water over the entire surface.
